Report: Sunderland now rank 9th in the whole country for one impressive statistic this season

An emerging report has revealed that Sunderland rank 9th in the whole of England, for one impressive statistic.

The 2023/24 season looks set to go down as a fairly forgettable one for Sunderland.

Although it’s only their second season back in the second tier, and although they sit in 2th place of the table as things stand, it could’ve been so much more for the Black Cats.

Last season under Tony Mowbray, Sunderland went on to claim a last-gasp play-off finish, capping a remarkable return to the Championship following their League One play-off final victory.

But the problems this season seemed to start when Sunderland and Mowbray parted ways.

Michael Beale came in and made matters worse, leaving Mike Dodds to pick up the pieces and try and get this misfiring, low-confidence set of players across the line.

But there’s been one constant throughout the season.

Sunderland average attendance

Through thick and thin, the Black Cats boast a loyal and passionate set of fans.

Whether the going is good or not, Sunderland fans rock up to the Stadium of Light in their droves every week.

And now, an emerging report from Transfermarkt has now revealed that Sunderland rank 9th in the whole of England for average attendance this season.

Manchester United rank 1st with an average attendance of 73,523 and are followed by West Ham, Spurs, and Arsenal all with an average attendance of more than 60,000.

Liverpool, Manchester City, and Newcastle United all follow with average attendance of over 50,000 this season, then come Aston Villa in 8th with an average attendance of 41,783, and Sunderland in 9th with 40,412.

The Black Cats boast a higher average attendance than Chelsea who’s number is 39,633 this season.

Stadium of Light capacity

The Stadium of Light can seat up to 48,707 fans.

That makes it the biggest stadium in England outside of the Premier League and the 15th biggest stadium in the whole of the UK.

Sunderland’s average attendance of 40,412 means that the Stadium of Light has been 82.97% full this season.

Sunderland fans in full voice

The Black Cats certainly boast one of the best and biggest stadiums in the country, and some of the best fans too.

It’s what makes Sunderland a club with so much potential and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus may yet be the man to finally unlock and sustain that potential.

Although this season is petering out into a disappointing one, it could still be a comfortable mid-table finish in the Championship, which after four years in League One is a blessing.

That being said, the Black Cats could quickly be drawn into a dog fight with only nine points between them and the drop zone, with a tricky game against 11th place Cardiff City on the agenda for Friday.

Kick off is at 3pm in the Welsh capital.
