DOSB gives basketballer Schröder a flag bearer fact checking lesson

Basketball world champion Dennis Schröder's desire to be German flag bearer at the Paris Olympics has been met with a fact checking statement by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) which also pointed out that he hasn't been nominated yet.

Schröder had said again this week, in an interview with the ran portal, that "it would be a huge honour for me" and that there was "nothing greater than carrying the flag for your own country."

He added that the DOSB hasn't contacted him yet and said that "I think a few athletes will be selected and then a draw will be made somehow."

"Hello Dennis, we are in touch. Your wish to be the flag bearer in Paris 2024 for Team D has been received. A quick fact check on this and your other questions," The DOSB said on X, formerly Twitter.

"How to become a flag bearer of Team D? Before the Games, we will select 5 men and 5 women from Team D for whom the fans and members of Team D can vote publicly in July. The winner & the female winner will carry the flag together at the opening ceremony.

"Have you already been nominated for the Olympic Games? Not officially. The nominations by the DOSB will take place from mid-May. But if everything goes well, you shouldn't have to worry about your participation in the Games."

Barring injury, the Brooklyn Nets' Schröder will be part of the German team, after captaining it to a first-ever World Cup title last year.

The Paris opening ceremony is on July 26, and the Games run until August 11.
