Deputies of the Ukrainian Parliament, Verkhovna Rada, do not always adhere to democratic standards, proposing draft bills that do not fit into the EU legal system, says European Parliament member Viola von Cramon-Taubadel in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
"We see some, let's say worrisome indications, and we see some crazy draft bills which do not fit in the EU acquis, which do not fit in this ambition of becoming a member," she stated.
Cramon-Taubadel showed respect to all the colleagues in the Rada, to all the colleagues working on the executive side, for drafting their respective bills, then for voting on this, then for implementing.
"So a lot is being done. And it's much more than many people in the European Union had expected," she said. Cramon-Taubadel noted that there's unity in reforming the country, putting the right bills forward, and making sure that everything is according to the European track.
"But there's also a second angle and that means governance and governance means inclusiveness, means rights of the opposition, parliamentary pluralism, means inclusion of civil society, means working with, let's say, experts on the ground and not just with very few people in the presidential administration," she noted.
According to a survey by the Razumkov Center as of January 2024, the majority of Ukrainians express distrust towards the state apparatus (officials), with 75% indicating a lack of confidence. Similarly, Ukrainians lack trust in political parties (72%) and the Verkhovna Rada (70%).
There's also a notable lack of trust in deputies. In December 2023, the majority of respondents expressed distrust towards prominent figures such as Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the Batkivshchyna faction (85%), Yurii Boyko, leader of the Opposition Platform - For Life party (81%), Petro Poroshenko from the European Solidarity faction (74%), as well as members of the Servant of the People party, Maryana Bezuhla (58.5%), and Davyd Arakhamia (57%).
