I refer to the article Bid To Bring More Tourists To County (Advertiser, March 14) and was pleased to read comments by Keith Girling on the subject of bringing more tourists to the county.
How right he is to refer to other famous names associated with the county, not just the fictitious Robin Hood .
The world-famous poet, Lord Byron, spent his formative years in Southwell (1803-08) living in Burgage Manor (he was not allowed to go and live at Newstead Abbey until he was 21) when he was at Harrow School and Trinity College Cambridge.
This year is the bicentenary of Byron’s death in Greece in 1824. He was one of the most famous men in the Europe of his day, as famous as Napoleon.
I am writing another book about the poet showing that the genesis of his poetry was here in Southwell,1806/7, his first four books being published by S&J Ridge in Newark.
