David Ornstein shares whether the Premier League could scrap PSR after Everton's point deduction

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has shared whether the Premier League will look to scrap PSR after unprecedented circumstances this season.

Everton have been struck twice by the authorities this season, initially receiving a 10-point deduction that was eventually reduced to six.

Nottingham Forest have also been hit with a points deduction, albeit not as severe as Everton’s initial punishment. Nevertheless, the City Ground side are still set to appeal.

David Ornstein drops verdict on whether PSR will be scrapped

Ornstein, among the most respected journalists in the country, has been asked what he thinks will happen to the Premier League’s current legislation.

In a Q&A for The Athletic, he said: “I imagine it will always be here in some form and rightly so.

“That’s like saying, will there always be rules around doping in sports, or will there come a time when the restrictions are removed? But definitely, there will be more tinkering with the system to try to produce a fairer and more satisfactory landscape which successfully serves the intended purpose.

“The problem is that there are so many different perspectives and circumstances that it will never please everybody. However, I do think we can—and hopefully will—get to a better place than we are in now.”

The club’s hearing occurred between Monday and Wednesday this week as Everton laid down their second case of the season. Speaking to Sky Sports earlier in the week, Kaveh Solhekol suggested the club are unhappy with the calculations made regarding their second PSR hearing.

With the hearing now finished, it’s believed a decision will be made within weeks; April 8 has emerged as a potential date for the Premier League to reveal their potential punishment.

All Evertonians want is clarity. Sean Dyche and the players need to know where they stand heading into the business end of the 2023/24 season. Of course, this group of players needs to start winning games, but uncertainty cannot help anyone at this stage.
