'I was told': West Ham are 'serious contenders' to sign £60m goal-scorer this summer - journalist

Journalist Alex Crook has now been sharing some information on West Ham United’s pursuit to sign a striker this coming summer.

Despite making several signings over the years, David Moyes has always reverted back to 33-year-old Michail Antonio, who has ultimately proved the more reliable option.

Since Moyes was re-appointed at the end of 2019, West Ham have sold Sebastian Haller and bought both Gianluca Scamacca and Danny Ings.

Of course, Scamacca is no longer with the club, having returned to Italy with Atalanta.

And right now, without considering Jarrod Bowen’s ability to play through the middle, West Ham’s striker options are probably the worst they’ve been for some time.

Whether it’s for David Moyes or another manager – a situation Gary Neville has been discussing recently, West Ham desperately need to add a top striker this summer.

And given their recruitment department is now led by Tim Steidten’s expertise, there’s reason to believe that things will be better executed this time around.

That being said, Alex Crook has now shared some exciting information in regards to the possibility of West Ham signing Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

West Ham are serious contenders to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer

Crooks was speaking on the ‘Premier League All Access’ podcast and called West Ham ‘serious contenders’ to sign Toney this summer.

He explained: “Interestingly on West Ham, I was told this week they are serious contenders for the signature of Ivan Toney, who maybe we thought might be snapped up by a bigger club in the Premier League – it shows how ambitious the owners are.”

Of course, it would be a huge coup for West Ham to sign a player of Toney’s calibre, considering he’s so often been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea for example.

Toney has now scored 36 goals in his 78 Premier League appearances since being promoted with Brentford.

And having proved his level for England over the break, playing alongside Jarrod Bowen against Belgium, there’s no doubt that the £60m-rated striker would improve West Ham’s eleven no end.

It feels as if West Ham have either taken too many risks or even played it too safe in the striker market in recent years – there hasn’t been a middle ground.

And Toney would certainly be a striker who could ignite West Ham’s fortunes this summer, even if he perhaps would take some convincing to join after the level of clubs he’s been linked with.
