'I love his attitude': Pundit says he's been proven wrong by Manchester United player he really worried about

Terry Gibson has admitted that he feared for one Manchester United player earlier this season, but now believes that he has to start every game he is fit for.

It has been a difficult season for those at Old Trafford. The club showed real promise during Erik ten Hag‘s first year. However, they have gone backwards, now finding themselves 17 points behind the league leaders.

Of course, there is a feeling of cautious optimism amongst some of the fans following the arrival of INEOS. But there are also some positives on the pitch right now.

Kobbie Mainoo continues to impress with every appearance. Meanwhile, Sir Jim Ratcliffe apparently wants to build his team around Alejandro Garnacho.

Remarkably, Hojlund went into Boxing Day still awaiting his first Premier League goal. However, since the turn of the year, he has been a different animal.

The Dane has now scored eight goals in his last nine games for United in all competitions. And speaking on Premier League All Access, Terry Gibson insisted that he is a player the Red Devils simply cannot be without if he is fit and available.

“Yeah, I think he’s a must now. If he’s fit, he plays. And he’s in good form. And he’s been a good addition,” he said. “There was a lot of pressure on him when he joined United for such a high transfer fee. He’s still so young.

“The comparison’s clearly been made with Erling Haaland. He’s a little bit older, a bit more experienced. But Scandinavian strikers, it was ‘oh, he’s not as good as Haaland’. No one is as good as Erling Haaland. But he has settled down.

“It took him a while, and I feared for him, at times, to be honest, in the early stages of the season. Because he was getting a lot of blame, a lot of flak. And you could see from a striker’s point of view that his runs were being ignored. He wasn’t getting the service. Maybe didn’t have the trust of his teammates. And maybe at the beginning of the season he was suffering with an injury. I think he joined the club with a back problem.

“But since then, he’s really worked hard. I love his attitude. And I think he’s got the talent, he’s certainly got the ability, I’ve been impressed with his attitude.”

A real opportunity to build something special at Old Trafford

Certainly, United have a group of players they can build around. The likes of Mainoo, Garnacho and Hojlund have so much potential. And they could have a huge impact on the club’s fortunes for a long time to come yet.

Hojlund is the eldest of the three at 21. And his record of seven goals in 20 Premier League games is extremely encouraging for someone in their first year in the division.

Gibson probably was not the only one who had concerns for Hojlund. Manchester United have spent a lot of money poorly in the transfer market in the last few years.

He still has some way to go before he has justified the money spent on him. But the potential is there.
