'I'd probably lean towards': Ally McCoist predicts if Leeds will be promoted automatically, changed his mind

Leeds United’s players will return from the international break with the Whites sitting on top of the Championship table – albeit Leeds having played an extra game than second-placed Leicester City.

Prior to the international break, Leeds beat Millwall to go ahead of Leicester in the Championship – with The Foxes losing to Chelsea in The FA Cup. The international break put the promotion race on hold.

Heartbreak, for four Leeds players and notably, Dan James. Wales went all the way to the Euro 2024 play-off final, before losing on penalties against Poland – James missing the all-important penalty. Painful.

Hopefully, it will not affect the pocket-sized winger and indeed, Connor Roberts, Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu. Especially, with Leeds straight back into action on Friday night, Leeds travelling to Watford.

Ally McCoist on whether Leeds United will be promoted

It is a huge game for Daniel Farke’s men, especially with Leicester and Ipswich playing earlier in the day. Southampton remain in the hunt for the top two, but they’ve tailed off – even if they have games in hand.

Speaking to Football League World, Scottish legend and TalkSPORT presenter Ally McCoist shared who he thinks will finish in the top two. He admits he has changed his mind – and is confident Leeds will go up.

“I’m going to tell you the gospel truth, three months ago I thought Leicester and Ipswich were away. I thought they were plain sailing, but that was me underestimating the league again. But it’s been brilliant.

“The momentum is with Leeds. I think they’ll go up, and that would certainly excite me. I love watching them. I love going to Elland Road. If you poke me with a stick, I’d probably lean towards Leicester.”

Daniel Farke must be worried about Leeds quartet after break

Leeds look good for it right now. A huge 12 wins in 13 league games since the turn of the year, conceding only three goals and keeping 10 clean sheets. Farke has done this befofre – eyeing his third promotion.

Indeed, his third Championship title. What Leeds will be worried about is the mental knock and physical tiredness of their Welsh quartet after what happened in the week. Hopefully, they can put it aside.

Leeds need them, too. Ampadu and Rodon are crucial and James has had a massive impact this term. If Leeds are to go up automatically, then they need that quartet to contunue to do what they have been.

Leeds beat Watford 3-0 at home in the reverse fixture and given the inconsistency at Vicarage Road once again this season, you would imagine Leeds will go there and win. It is all about results, at this stage.
