David Ornstein has now predicted that one of the best strikers in Europe will join Manchester United this summer.
The Athletic’s football correspondent made the comments when engaging in a Q&A session earlier on Thursday.
Ornstein is regarded as one of the most reliable journalists around, so a number of fans flocked to his Q&A to ask for some inside information on what they can expect to happen in the transfer market this summer.
For the Manchester United fans who laid eyes on the Q&A, there was a very interesting response to one particular question…
David Ornstein tips striker to join Manchester United
Well – firstly – we must stress that Ornstein answered this question with a purely opinionated stance, rather than having any actual information about this deal being likely.
Nevertheless – with all things considered – Ornstein backed Ivan Toney to join Manchester United this summer.
When asked where he sees the Brentford No.17 ending up this summer, the hugely respected journalist responded: “This is purely an opinion and not information but I do wonder about Man Utd. They have long been looking to bolster their front line, Ten Hag wanted Kane and Hojlund was (despite the price) always seen as a development signing / one for the future.
“Hojlund has done really well but it’s a huge responsibility on the shoulders and strain on the body of a relatively inexperienced 21-year-old. With Martial expected to leave and uncertainty around the futures of others, perhaps there is scope to go for a Toney. If they decide to, it may of course come down to whether they are prepared to pay what Brentford want.”
Ivan Toney price tag
In terms of a price tag, the Mirror believe Brentford want £100m to sell the England international this summer.
However, that may simply be a case of the Bees wanting to scare clubs.
A story from Sportslens stated that Edu – Director of Football at Arsenal – believes a deal could be done for closer to £60m, as Toney will only have 12 months remaining on his contract at Brentford this summer.
Nevertheless – unless Brentford are relegated this season – Thomas Frank’s side can stand firm, so they may well be serious about that £100m price tag.
Whatever the fee, it is likely to cost a lot of money to sign Toney, although his efforts in the Premier League have been up to the standards of a world class striker.
Only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane scored more than the 28-year-old’s tally of 20 Premier League goals last season, so he is certainly capable of repaying a huge transfer fee.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen in the summer transfer window.
