Scientists are using AI to match owners with their ideal dog

In a bid to provide customers with their future best friends, scientists are working on an AI that allows potential owners to pick the specific dog they need.

With hundreds of breeds to choose from, selecting your four-legged friend can be a difficult undertaking. Even after you’ve selected the breed, you need to find a pooch with a personality that fits into your day-to-day life.

They used AI to sort dogs into categories

Computer scientists out of the University of East London are working on an artificial intelligence model that not only matches owners with breeds, but specific dogs. Though AI might be somewhat controversial in 2024, it’s clearly going to be a major feature in our future.

“These personality types are defined based on the behavioral attributes, not the breed, not the gender of the dog,” Dr. Mohammad Amirhosseini, a senior lecturer, told CBS News. “Our best-performing model achieved 99% accuracy, which is amazing.”

To build the model, the researchers used over 70,000 sets of behavioral data provided by the University of Pennsylvania.

From there, the AI then sorted and highlighted five distinct groups of dogs. They were, excitable and hyper-attached, anxious and fearful, aloof and predatory, reactive and assertive, and calm and agreeable.

How can the AI model be used to pick a dog?

Through the AI program, researchers are able to allocate specific dogs to the type of task or job they need to perform. Such tasks could be anything from sniffing out drugs to cuddling with the family.

“If we have an idea about the dog’s personality in advance,” Dr. Amirhosseini explained, “we can select the right dog for the right job.”

The landmark new technology is definitely needed according to the latest stats and figures. The Orvis and Spots organization reported that 60% of adopted pets don’t remain in the homes they are taken into. Furthermore, 20% are returned back to the original shelter.
