Rangers star open to being pitted against exit-bound Ibrox teammate in the USA - report

When Dujon Sterling signed for Rangers, an international call from Jamaica was probably furthest from his mind.

The full-back had turned down contracts at Stoke City and even Chelsea – the club at which Sterling came through – to move to Ibrox.

This was a big step, and a challenging one. Especially given Rangers captain James Tavernier plays in the defender’s “natural” position.

But after finding his feet in Govan, Dujon Sterling has put himself firmly at the centre of the Rangers squad, quite literally, and it’s caught the attentions of Jamaica.

Dujon Sterling eyed by Jamaica

An England youth international up to U17 level, at 24-years-old there’s a feeling that if Dujon Sterling was destined to make the breakthrough for the Three Lions, he’d have done it already.

It’s led the Scottish Sun to claim that Jamaica’s Icelandic manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has one eye on the Ibrox utility man ahead of this summer’s Copa America.

Dujon Sterling qualifies for Jamaica through both of his parents and the report claims that the Rangers star is interested in hearing what the Caribbean nation has to say.

Should Dujon get the call for this summer’s tournament – which is being hosted in the United States – then he could miss part of Philippe Clement’s pre-season preparations.

If Jamaica go deep into the tournament – an unlikely scenario – then it could see Sterling miss the bulk of them.

The Copa America runs from June 20th to July 14th with the Final to be held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Clash of Ibrox stars at Copa America?

If Dujon Sterling is to be called up for Jamaica at the Copa America, there are a couple of Rangers links to the story.

Teammate Kemar Roofe is a Jamaican international and if fit will also be in contention for a call-up to the nation’s Copa America squad.

Should either or both players make it, they’ll likely face off against a Rangers teammate too.

Jamaica have been drawn in Group B of the competition and will come up against Mexico, Venezuela, and Ecuador.

Rangers midfielder Jose Cifuentes – who is out on loan at Brazilian side Cruzeiro – is likely to be lining up for the Ecuadoreans at the tournament.

Whilst the midfielder is unlikely to return to Rangers, it’s very likely the midfielder will still technically be an Ibrox star this summer.

Rangers also have a couple of other South Americans on their books, although it is unlikely Oscar Cortes (Colombia) or Danilo (Brazil) will be playing at the tournament.
