'Vulnerable...': Former Sheffield Wednesday defender gives 14-word verdict on Swansea equaliser

Sheffield Wednesday missed out on two potentially vital points in the battle to avoid relegation from the Championship on Friday afternoon.

The Owls hosted Swansea City at Hillsborough, where a win would have seen them climb out of the relegation zone.

Danny Rohl‘s side took the lead shortly before half time through Bailey Cadamarteri’s close range finish.

However, Sheffield Wednesday were unable to extend their lead throughout the second half.

That allowed Swansea City to equalise late on. From a corner, Harry Darling was able to head the ball into the path of Jamal Lowe, who controlled and fired home to secure a point for the visitors.

From a Sheffield Wednesday point of view though, the nature of that goal was rather frustrating.

Having missed out on the win here, the Owls remain 23rd in the the Championship table as things stand.

However, they are level on points with 21st placed Birmingham City, only behind them on goal difference.

A win here, could therefore have been crucial to any hopes Sheffield Wednesday have of avoiding relegation.

The nature of the draw, was therefore seemingly tough to take. Speaking about how the game played out on BBC Radio Sheffield, former Owls defender Mark Smith said:

“It’s a free header. That’s football. You’re vulnerable when you’re holding onto a one-nil.”

Next up for Sheffield Wednesday is a trip to The Riverside Stadium to face Middlesbrough on Monday afternoon.

A missed opportunity for Sheffield Wednesday

It is hard not to see this as anything other than two points dropped for the Owls.

Having got into that position in the game, those connected with the club will no doubt have been thinking about this as a potentially big win in the battle for survival.

Indeed, with the chances they had created, there may be an argument that Sheffield Wednesday could have been further clear on the scoresheet, and set for three points.

So to go from that, to giving away a relatively cheap goal to remain in the bottom three, is going to be disappointing.

Beyond that, Swansea City have struggled away from home at times recently. They also seemingly have little left to play for.

As a result, they may have been there for the taking, and the fact they could not do that, may be somewhat disappointing for Rohl and his team.

It will now be interesting to see how Rohl is able to pick his team up, with a short turnaround to Monday’s trip to Middlesbrough.
