Alan Shearer delivers his instant reaction to Newcastle beating West Ham in thriller

Newcastle United edged West Ham in a thriller on Saturday afternoon.

While this Premier League season has not been easy for Newcastle, St James’ Park erupted on the final whistle after Eddie Howe’s side came from behind to beat the Hammers 4-3.

It was a game the Magpies looked as if they’d thrown away, falling to 3-1 down after Alexander Isak’s penalty. All of Tino Livramento, Miguel Almiron and Jamaal Lascelles had to come off injured but, still, the home side found a way.

Anthony Gordon was excellent, playing a hand in all of Newcastle’s goals until he was sent off for a second yellow card in the dying embers of the game. Harvey Barnes, meanwhile, scored two goals at the death to ensure a truly famous win.

Not even all of that sums up what an incredible game that was to watch.

Alan Shearer, however, has probably summed it best.

Newcastle proved their fighting spirit against West Ham

This season has been difficult for so many reasons.

An injury crisis and problems with summer signings have not made things easy at all. Still, what can rarely be questioned in this Newcastle team is their fighting spirit.

They may not always convince but they rarely fail to compete.

It was a fantastic afternoon for Barnes in particular. He’s struggled to adapt following freakish injury problems but afternoons like this one underline what a good player Newcastle have on their hands.

This felt like a moment in which Barnes truly announced himself to the Newcastle faithful. We’ve had to be patient with him but that was some performance.

While injury issues and Gordon’s suspension are issues to have emerged from the game, Newcastle proved their season is not yet over.
