What Newcastle fans were still singing after beating West Ham - journalist

Newcastle United continue to offer up drama.

While consistency remains an issue this season, there is little doubt that this Newcastle side are capable of some great moments.

Indeed, you can add Saturday’s 4-3 win over West Ham in a Premier League classic to a list that includes victories over Paris Saint-Germain, both Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Arsenal, high-flying Aston Villa (twice, no less) and Sunderland this season.

Eddie Howe’s side rose from the dead to claim what could yet be a vital three points in the battle for European qualification.

Instrumental to that of course was a certain Harvey Barnes.

The winger has not had it easy during the opening few months of his Newcastle career. Injury problems – the likes of which the club’s medical staff had never seen in football before – have seriously impacted his game time.

However, Barnes struck twice after coming on as a substitute, levelling the game at 3-3 before scoring a fantastic late winner.

As you might imagine, the Geordie faithful were delighted with him.

Newcastle fans sing ‘Barnes will tear you apart’ as the winger is getting interviewed

Naturally, Barnes was the subject of a post-match interview having turned the game around.

Even with the stadium emptying, Newcastle fans still found time to serenade the former Leicester star.

According to journalist Ciaran Kelly on X (formerly Twitter), supporters were chanting “Barnes will tear you apart” as he was finishing his post-match chat.

Harvey Barnes is proving a game changer this season

Throw in his goal to rescue a point against Luton too and it’s clear that Barnes is emerging as something of a game-changer this season.

Clearly, it has been incredibly frustrating to see his progress limited by so many injuries but he already looks more decisive in the final third than the man he replaced, Allan Saint-Maximin.

He’s already scored four times the number of goals as the Frenchman did last season despite playing in a team that does not function anywhere near as well.

Newcastle’s decision to sign him is getting increasingly more vindicated.
