Newcastle United’s win over West Ham will linger long in the memory.
Harvey Barnes struck two fantastic late goals to complete one of the most memorable Newcastle comebacks in recent years and, naturally, was duly serenaded by supporters.
It was an eventful game at St James’ Park and there are many negatives for Eddie Howe to consider, such as the frankly ridiculous defensive frailties and the sheer number of injuries that keep appearing.
Still, for now, it’s about celebrating a fantastic day on Tyneside.
West Ham more than played their part and can perhaps feel aggrieved at the second penalty Alexander Isak ended up scoring, with Kalvin Phillips having at least an argument that his tackle on Anthony Gordon was not a foul.
Lucas Paqueta, who was strongly linked with a move to Newcastle, was one of the standout players, too. It was the Brazilian – a good friend of Bruno Guimaraes – who helped tee their first two goals with some fantastic passes.
Paqueta and Guimaraes were competitive throughout even despite their friendship, hauling each other down at times.
After the game, the West Ham star sent a classy message to Guimaraes.

Guimaraes took to Instagram after the game, captioning a photo of himself celebrating: “What a gameeee! St James Park makes things possible!! Together we can do this”
In response, Paqueta wrote: “I love you buddy, you play hard.”

Able to operate in midfield and out wide, Paqueta would have been some signing for Newcastle, who were said to have been interested as recently as May 2023.
He’s proven himself more than capable of cutting it in the Premier League and that array of passing feeding the likes of Barnes, Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak is a mouth-watering prospect.
What’s done is done, however, and it’s nice to see the two so respectful after quite the battle.
