'You're a liar': Nancy Mace brutally fact-checked for crime spree claim

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 10: U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace

Rep. Nancy Mace took to social media Saturday to claim that crime had "skyrocketed" under President Joe Biden's administration then faced a swift and brutal fact check.

"You're seeing, since President Joe Biden took office, crime skyrocket all around the country," Mace (R-SC) claims in a video statement shared on X. "It's not okay, we're a nation of laws, we should follow them."

Mace runs through the list of conservative "law and order" talking points that equate immigration status with criminality and blames border control policy for violence and the spread of fentanyl.

Data that show the fentanyl crisis is predominantly smuggled in, and funded by, U.S. citizens, as was reported by the libertarian think tank the Cato Institute. A recent Washington Post report notes there is "little evidence undocumented immigrants commit more crime."

This may by viewers of Mace's video were hesitant to take her word that Biden's administration was responsible for a crime wave, such as journalist Aaron Rupar raised concerns about something missing from her comment.

"Nancy, I noticed you didn’t cite a single statistic in your little video," he said. "That’s because you’re a liar."

Rupar, meanwhile, cited a New York Times article from December on F.B.I. data that show the U.S. saw a "sharp decline" in homicides after a spike during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"As 2023 comes to a close, the country is likely to see one of the largest — if not the largest — yearly declines in homicides, according to recent F.B.I. data and statistics collected by independent criminologists and researchers," the report reads. "Among nine violent and property crime categories tracked by the F.B.I., the only figure that is up over the first three quarters of this year is motor vehicle theft."

Or, as Democratic strategist Sawyer Hackett told Mace, Crime in all categories—violent, property, murder—is down significantly nationwide."

Hackett and Rupar were not the only one to share negative views on Mace's statement.

"Nancy Mace is a liar," said Harry Sisson. "FBI data says crime has plummeted under Joe Biden."

"Can you show me a graph where crime has increased," asked X user Tartag, "or is this another lie?"

X user Courier Fontella Bass took the opportunity to quiz Mace about former President Donald Trump's four criminal court cases in New York, Florida, Georgia and Washington D.C.

"You ain’t kidding, Nancy!" Bass wrote. "We gotta do something about all this crime!"

"Absolutely maddening that it’s perfectly acceptable for a representative of the people to just lie with impunity," replied Wills Bethanne. "Our leaders should be held to a higher standard. Lying to us should be grounds for removal and loss of opportunity to run again."
