'Maybe': Mason Mount makes damning Manchester United admission after Brentford draw

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has made a damning admission about the side’s performance against Brentford.

Manchester United managed to escape London with an undeserved point on Saturday night after drawing 1-1.

The home side completely dominated the game and had 31 attempts on goal but it was Erik ten Hag’s side who took the lead in the 96th minute.

Mason Mount grabbed what appeared to be the winner after he swept the ball home with a lovely finish.

It would have been one of the biggest smash-and-grab jobs in recent memory but United couldn’t even hold on for the few minutes remaining.

Brentford finally found the back of the net when Kristoff Ajer slammed in Ivan Toney’s fantastic cut-back.

It’s a far cry from the jubilation of the win over Liverpool last time out and Mount has had his say on the match.

Speaking to Sky Sports, via UtdDistrict, after the match, Mount admitted United did not deserve to win the game.

He said: “If you look at the game overall it wasn’t to our standard.

“We know that. When you score at the death you think you can maybe hang on. But maybe we didn’t deserve it.

“Brentford make it difficult. It is never easy coming here. They make it tough and get around you. Maybe we didn’t get it going from the beginning.

“We know we can improve, and we need to because we need to win games. We will improve, we will work hard.

“These are the games you want to win. We need to step up, and that is what we will focus on.”

Same old story for Manchester United

Ten Hag echoed Mount’s thoughts in his own interview, saying United had to be happy with the point given the performance even though they lost the late lead.

This is nothing new for United and the Liverpool victory was clearly another false dawn. The same problems have persisted throughout the campaign and the manager has been unable to solve them.

Injuries have been a continued issue, and there were yet more blows for Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof who went off injured, but the excuse can only go so far.

United have a squad with talented, expensive players and Ten Hag should be getting more out of them than this.
