Kalvin Phillips sticks up middle finger in angry exchange with West Ham fans after Newcastle loss

Kalvin Phillips has risked turning the entire West Ham fanbase against him after he was filmed showing his middle finger to a group of Hammers fans who were giving him abuse as he got on the team bus at Newcastle.

Phillips is attempting to revive his career at the London Stadium having failed to make an impact at Manchester City.

He opted to leave for West Ham in the January transfer window after it become clear he would not be given any more opportunities by Pep Guardiola.

But it's been far from straightforward for Phillips since joining up with David Moyes' side.

Kalvin Phillips took exception to the abuse he received

The England international has failed to win over fans since joining in the January transfer window and his display off the bench against Newcastle left some travelling supporters furious.

Phillips gave away a penalty in the dramatic 4-3 loss to Newcastle after West Ham previously held a 3-1 lead in the match.

Moyes brought Phillips on to help shore things up in front of West Ham's defence, but the visitors then shipped in three goals to leave the north ease with nothing.

A small group of West Ham fans stuck around at the end to watch the players get on the team bus.

Some could be heard asking for autographs and pictures as Phillips walked towards the coach.

There was then a loud shout of 'useless' from a man towards Phillips as the midfielder got on the bus, who then turned around and stuck up his middle finger in response.

Cries of 'get out' could be heard from the small group of West Ham fans before the video cut out.

Moyes stuck up for Phillips after the game as he felt the penalty decision against him was soft.

Kalvin Phillips didn't like the abuse he was receiving

"We tried to give ourselves another midfield player at 3-1 up and we didn't want to wait for it to get to 3-2," he said.

"Probably that decision didn't work on the day, but more importantly I think the boy puts his foot in front of Kalvin and I don't know how he's supposed to see his leg.

"The penalty kick makes it 3-2 and we had been doing OK.

Kalvin Phillips has struggled since joining West Ham

"We gave up a couple of chances before that which I didn't like and they had started to get some control shooting down the hill, but we had another day when very few things went for us."

The loss for West Ham meant that Newcastle closed to within one point of Moyes' side.

Both teams are still battling to secure European football next season, but Brighton, Wolves, Chelsea and Fulham are also in contention.
