'He gave us a spark'... MUTV pundit praises the one Manchester United player who impressed him

Manchester United were fortunate to leave Brentford with a point, and yet can also be annoyed not to have won.

When you score to take a 1-0 lead in the 96th minute you expect to win. Yet Manchester United contrived todraw 1-1 with Brentford.

It was a rookie mistake to concede straight after scoring. It’s not the first time we have seen this from Manchester United this season either.

United were quite fortunate to get away with at least a point, however, with Brentford dominating large parts of the match and putting pressure on the Red Devils defence.

Mason Mount goal was a positive

There were a handful of positives for Manchester United despite the draw, including the return of centre-back Lisandro Martinez, a second half substitute.

Another injury-hit player was Manchester United’s goalscorer, with Mason Mount coming off the bench.

This was Mount’s first goal in a Manchester United shirt, after he was put through by fellow substitute Casemiro.

It sparked delirious scenes, and unfortunately, a lack of focus followed. Mount could not celebrate fully at the final whistle, with United conceding an improbable equaliser.

Mount’s performance was praised on MUTV, with former defender Wes Brown explaining he was impressed by his contribution, even before the goal.

He said: “When he came on he gave us a spark. He needed that goal and I hope he can kick on now. A great moment for Mason.”

Brown was not so impressed with United’s performance, adding: “It was a game Brentford dominated. If you come up against a better team, that could have been all sorts of score.”

Brentford managed 31 shots to Manchester United’s 11, although both sides managed five on target each.

Mason Mount contribution v Brentford

Mason Mount was brought on in the 80th minute as part of a late change from Erik ten Hag, replacing Marcus Rashford.

Mount managed 11 touches, including his goal, completing three of four pass attempts. He drew two fouls and made one clearance.

Former defender Gary Pallister added, via MUTV: “It’s been a difficult season with injuries. To come on and score that goal… terrific finish.

“He can use that as a platform for the rest of the season, give him some confidence to feel at home at United and hopefully progress.”
