Data reveals America’s most expensive states for college, where fees set students back $31,000 a year

The illuminating research highlights the gulf between the cheapest and most expensive college states in the country.

It’s often said that your college days are some of the best years of your life. A coming-of-age time for many, the transitional period between school and adult life is a great time to further your education while, as they say, ‘finding yourself’. But rather revealing new data shows just how much budding college students may have to cough up for the experience, and it’s certainly more expensive in some states than others…

New data reveals which states have the most expensive colleges

Based on a calculation of the most recent data from 2021-2023 on tuition fees, additional mandatory fees and accommodation charges, the team at an online essay writing service claims to have worked out which US state is the most expensive for college students.

And, according to their data, the most expensive college education in the US can be found in Vermont – where students are supposedly paying $31,180 per year, on average.

Vermont has the most expensive average tuition in America at $18,572 annually, with room fees accounting for $8,427 before an additional $4,811 average boarding cost is accounted for.

New Hampshire was found to be the second most expensive state at a total average cost of $30,398, with Connecticut in third place at $30,344.

Where can you find the cheapest college fees?

Conversely, there is a significant dip in average college costs between Vermont and the cheapest state in the US.

In last place with the cheapest average college costs was Utah – at a relatively meager $16,238.

While obviously still a large amount of money, college students in Utah are paying around $10,000 less, on average, in tuition fees when compared to Vermont.

The average room fees in Utah were just $3,961, while boarding came in at $4,210. The runners-up in the race for the cheapest college state were Wyoming and Florida, coming in at a total average cost of $6,730 and $6,651, respectively.

Boarding is extortionate in some US states

While some states aren’t overly expensive when it comes to the actual college fees, potential attendees will have to put up with frighteningly high accommodation costs.

Topping the list of the most expensive average from costs is, unsurprisingly, New York, where students had to pay an eye-watering $10,533 on average for a room in 2022.

California has the second most expensive room rate at $8,945 and is also home to the most expensive average boarding costs, at $6,846.

Discussing the findings, a spokesperson for the essay site said: “Whilst tuition fees have the largest impact on the total annual cost, having cheaper options for room and board can certainly make university and college more attractive to prospective students.”

“It will be interesting to see whether any of the ranked positions change in upcoming years and if these total costs are impacting the yearly enrollment numbers in each state,” they added.
