‘Special mention’: Gary Neville left amazed by £27m Arsenal player’s display at the Etihad today

Gary Neville has singled out an Arsenal player for praise after they picked up a vital point at Manchester City today.

Arsenal weren’t at their free-flowing best in the final third at the Etihad Stadium but they put in an outstanding defensive display.

Mikel Arteta’s side became the first team in 57 games to prevent Manchester City from scoring at home.

Much of that was down to William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, who have arguably been the best defensive pairing in the Premier League this season.

Indeed, Gary Neville handed Saliba his Player of the Match award after the goalless draw at the Etihad, labelling the Frenchman’s performance as ‘absolutely outstanding’.

The 22-year-old missed last season’s crunch clash at City through injury, with Guardiola’s men going on to win the game 4-1 and pick up the title.

And despite Saliba’s obvious impact at centre-back today, Neville was also keen to highlight the performance of his partner, Gabriel.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville also singled out Gabriel for praise after handing Saliba the Man of the Match award.

“A special mention for Gabriel as well, who isn’t far behind Saliba with his match performance as well in this match,” the Manchester United legend said.

Saliba and Gabriel continue to shine for Arsenal

While Saliba often earns the plaudits, Gabriel has been equally as impressive alongside him this season.

As a partnership, they’ve helped Arsenal record the most clean sheets in the Premier League this term with a total of 12.

Gabriel was withdrawn from the Brazil squad through injury during the international break and was a doubt heading into today’s game.

Arsenal certainly benefitted from the £27 million defender being passed fit to feature as he and Saliba kept City at bay.

Should the Gunners go on to lift the title, there’s no doubt that their defensive duo will have played a key role in their success.
