South Korea's Ministry of Defense has opened a research center aimed at introducing artificial intelligence in the defense sector, according to Yonhap.
With approximately 110 civilian and military personnel on board, this new facility will be dedicated to advancing AI-driven technologies for both manned and unmanned systems, enhancing battlefield situational awareness, and leveraging AI applications in the military for civilian purposes.
South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-Sik emphasized the pivotal role of AI development in future warfare, likening its significance to the evolution of semiconductors, space technologies, and cyberspace.
He underscored the commitment of South Korea's defense establishment to pursue innovative research and foster collaboration between the private sector and the military.
Previously, it was reported that South Korean law enforcement would deploy artificial intelligence to combat deepfakes. Police intend to use AI-generated data for investigative purposes rather than direct evidence.
The system will collaborate with AI experts to ensure accuracy in identifying fake content, particularly focusing on videos related to elections.
