Wolves' most important player pinpointed: Key statistics emerge about key man

Key statistics point towards who Wolves’ best player is with the club yet to win a Premier League without him this season.

Throughout the current campaign, plenty of first-teamers have stood out for Wolves. Gary O’Neil has seemingly got the best out of his players since joining the club at the start of the season.

Pedro Neto is finally back to his best whereas Matheus Cunha managed to end his slump at the club with a flurry of goals.

However, one man who has stood out is Joao Gomes. Often paired alongside Mario Lemina in the midfield, the Brazilian has really stood out in his first full season at the club.

Even in Wolves’ defeats, such as the 2-0 loss to Aston Villa, Joao Gomes has still had a great game and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

Now, one statistic indicates that the Brazilian may well be the club’s most important player.

Throughout the current campaign, one thing is clear, Joao Gomes is vital. In every game the Brazilian plays Wolves look more confident of getting the three points.

Now, this has been all but confirmed. In each of Wolves’ 12 Premier League wins the Brazilian has been in the starting XI. Yet, when O’Neil has not opted to start the midfielder or he has been unavailable, Wolves have not won in the League.

Joao Gomes has not started in six league games so far this season, two ended in draws with the other four being defeats. The last time this occurred was at the start of March as Wolves were demolished 3-0 by Newcastle.

The Brazilian’s ability to halt the opponent’s tempo clearly has a lot of influence in a victory. Even in the cup, the club lost away to Ipswich 3-2 when he did not start.

Joao Gomes is clearly going to go to the top. The midfielder possesses so many qualities at such a young age.

Now, the Brazilian is also an international after his country gave him his first cap against England last month.

Having a player with so much potential is something the club needs to harness. Building a team around Joao Gomes is definitely the way Wolves need to go.

The midfielder could easily be in the squad for the next 10 years based on his current performances and O’Neil clearly knows how to get the best out of him.
