One player is the glue that holds West Ham together and it's created a big problem for Moyes

West Ham United manager David Moyes has a big problem on his hands, caused by one player who has been superb for us this season.

David Moyes has a fantastic group of players at his disposal at West Ham – his squad is brimming full of exceptionally gifted stars.

However, there are certain areas of the Scot’s squad that are lacking in proper strength in depth. He absolutely must address that in the summer, not least because up to 12 players could leave the London Stadium this summer.

It’s a big concern for me that some of our key men who are crucial to the way that we play as a team have either no competition for their places or zero able bodied cover.

Moyes’s system only functions well when certain players produce moments of brilliance, whilst set-pieces is another one of the tactics that the 60-year-old places way too emphasis on.

Big changes are needed at the London Stadium this summer. It’s clear to see that we’ve become far too reliant on one man in particular…

West Ham manager David Moyes has a big problem

The Hammers are currently sitting in seventh place in the Premier League table, and have a Europa League quarter-final tie with Bayer Leverkusen to look forward to next week.

So it’s clearly not all bad, and there is plenty to be positive about right now. However, there is one very big problem staring Moyes squarely in the face.

In 15 games in all competitions since the turn of the new year, our form makes for worrying reading:

  • 3 wins
  • 6 losses
  • 6 draws

Our defeat to Newcastle capped of a miserable run of three games without a win, and the Hammers’ performance at St James’ Park highlighted our over reliance on one player in my opinion…

Edson Alvarez was really missed against the Toon. The frustrating thing is that he’ll miss two of our next three games as well through suspension, against Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen respectively.

He has been brilliant for the Hammers this season, and it’s clear to see when he’s not playing that he’s the glue that holds this team together.

We are unable to play out of the back without him, and our defenders are far too exposed in transition when he’s out of the side for whatever reason.

Alvarez is one of those players who you don’t fully appreciate until he doesn’t play, and then you realise just how much work he does for the team.

I guess that’s why Moyes brought in Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window, in the hope that the 28-year-old could fill in for the Mexico international.

However, it has been proven that the Manchester City owned midfielder is not on the same level as Alvarez. In fact, he’s nowhere near it.

Moyes has to address this in the summer, because it’s clear to see that the West Ham man will miss plenty of games through suspension, due to his aggressive playing style.

Bringing in someone with similar attributes to the 26-year-old will be absolutely pivotal to our chances of achieving success going forward.
