All American returns for season 6 with major casting disruption

Few shows on The CW have attracted the passionate following that American sports drama All American has. Created by April Blair and inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger, the show has been a network staple since its original premiere in 2018, and fans have been desperate for Daniel Ezra (who plays Spencer James) and others to reprise their roles in new episodes. The waiting game is over, but a new game has just begun with the arrival of All American season 6.

All American season 6 premieres on The CW

Episode 1 of All American season 6 premieres on The CW on Monday, April 1st at 8 pm ET.

New installments will then arrive on TV each Monday, and streamers can access new episodes the very next day over on the CW app.

Continuing on from season 5 which wrapped last May, season 6 marks the biggest gap between seasons the show has seen so far. Yet, the latest is also the shortest season, coming in at just 13 episodes, in stark contrast to the fifth season’s bountiful 20.

Despite less time with the characters this season, that time is worth treasuring. “When I think of Season 6, I think of home,” Bre-Z (Coop) shared during an interview with Deadline. “We’ve experienced life, but we’re getting back to home base.”

Central star Daniel gave insight that Spencer is “very hyper-focused on the NFL now. His NFL dreams are almost like in touching distance now. In high school, it was like a fantasy. And then now he’s in college, it’s kind of become real. He’s focused on rebuilding this GAU team, but it’s a little closer now.”

Hunter Clowdus not in All American season 6

What’s not closer, on the other hand, is a return from Hunter Clowdus’ character JJ Parker, who was recurring in the first three seasons. Giving us more of him later, the Beverly High Eagles football player became a series regular in season 4 and held down the position in the fifth.

Why isn’t he returning? Well, a representative told TVLine that JJ’s storyline and character “organically wrapped” at the end of season 5.

On the other hand, the actor took to Instagram last November, offering personal insight into how he felt about the decision to write him off the series. Admitting he “didn’t want to” exit for season 6 when replying to a fan in his comments, he elaborated: “That said I began to feel very unwelcome there and it was really taking a toll on my mental health. I still wanted to come back for the fans but at the end of the day it was their decision to not continue JJ’s character.”

Fans will certainly notice the omission almost straight away when turning into the latest installment, and there are sure to be some upset tweets later tonight.

All American premieres Mondays at 8 pm ET on The CW.
