'I'm told': Chelsea's interest in 'phenomenal' striker is now starting to cool - journalist

Chelsea now look unlikely to make a move for one centre-forward they have been linked with.

With Nicolas Jackson the only recognised striker in Chelsea’s squad right now and Armando Broja’s future in doubt, the Blues are likely to be in the market for a No.9.

Broja is currently at Fulham on loan, but having failed to impress there, the 22-year-old has not given his parent club much reason to bring him back into the first-team fold. He has been left out of their last two matchday squads.

In terms of who has been linked with a move to Chelsea, there have been quite a few names.

It has been claimed that Chelsea representatives have been watching Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres this season, while Brighton & Hove Albion’s Evan Ferguson is also thought to be someone who they have been looking at.

Chelsea’s interest cooling

Gyokeres has been in ridiculous form in the current campaign, scoring 36 goals in 40 appearances for Sporting.

Ferguson has been nowhere near as prolific, managing to net just six times in 36 outings, though he is still just 19 years of age.

Nevertheless, Chelsea do not look to be as hot on him as they were before.

On his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, journalist Simon Phillips posted: “I’m told that Chelsea’s recent interest in Ferguson is ‘fading’ for now at least.”

The Premier League striker Chelsea should sign this summer instead of Evan Ferguson

It is quite obvious that Ferguson does have potential. According to his Brighton team-mate James Milner, his finishing is “phenomenal”.

However, if Chelsea are to sign a striker from the Premier League this summer, then it should really be Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

At 28, the England international is, of course, more of a finished article than Ferguson and a proven goalscorer at this level.

Toney netted 20 times in the Premier League last season to help Brentford to actually finish above their west London rivals Chelsea.
