Roshane Thomas shares what David Moyes really thinks about the Kalvin Phillips situation

West Ham manager David Moyes brought Kalvin Phillips to the London Stadium on loan from Manchester City in January.

Kalvin Phillips has been a disastrous signing for West Ham so far, and now we’ve been told what David Moyes is thinking about the England international.

The 28-year-old’s terrible form for the Hammers over the past two months or so saw him lose his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad in March.

His move to Manchester City has clearly hindered his overall development as a footballer – something that Stan Collymore highlighted recently.

Phillips is quite simply not the player he was during his time at Leeds, and that’s definitely been caused by next to no football over the past 20 months or so.

In seven Premier League appearances for the Hammers so far, he has recorded some really poor stats, via Who Scored:

  • 79% pass completion
  • 0.6 interceptions per game
  • 0.4 clearances per game
  • 2 errors leading to goals
  • 1 red card

He looks completely out of his depth. In fairness to Phillips, he hadn’t started a Premier League game since May when he joined West Ham, and he is quite clearly not match fit yet.

I have to say though, I blame him for that just as much as anyone else. He’s had more than enough time to get up to speed with everything now.

But what does Moyes really think about the 28-year-old’s current situation at the London Stadium?

What David Moyes really thinks about Kalvin Phillips

The former Leeds United midfielder has not only been nowhere near good enough for us since his January move to the club, but he has also cost us numerous points with really bad decisions and errors.

The Bournemouth draw back in February and Saturday’s defeat to Newcastle are evidence of this. It’s difficult to see where he goes from here.

As things stand, he surely won’t be signed on a permanent basis in the summer, but could he still play any kind of positive role for us this season? That’s all down to Moyes of course.

And now it has been shared exactly what the Scot thinks about Phillips…

The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has an inside ear at the London Stadium, and he’s pretty well clued up on what’s going on at the club.

He took to his official X account earlier today and provided an update on what Moyes is really thinking about his January signing.

Thomas said:

“Moyes is hopeful the midfielder will rediscover his form.”

I have to say, that worries me. Is Moyes so focused on his big January signing not being a failure that he will keep persisting with him to the detriment of the team? I hope not.

It was claimed last month that Moyes actually won’t push to sign Phillips permanently in the summer transfer window.

I really hope that’s the truth. Moyes has to realise that Jesse Lingard’s success at the London Stadium was a one off – we shouldn’t be signing over-the-hill mercenaries any more.

The former Leeds man has been a million miles off the levels required to play Premier League football since he’s been at the London Stadium.

David Moyes may well be hopeful that Kalvin Phillips will come good but I just can’t see it happening while he’s with us. That ship has already sailed as far as I’m concerned.
