Biden has been trading insults with Trump. Is it working?

Cracks about Donald Trump’s legal and financial woes, even digs about his weight. Increasingly, nothing is off limits for Joe Biden as he and his campaign on the offensive in operation “get under Trump’s skin.”

But will it pay off? To be determined.

“Even people who have problems with Joe Biden think he’s a good guy and that offers the best contrast to Donald Trump,” Brad Bannon, who heads a political polling and consulting firm that works for Democratic candidates, recently told The Boston Globe. “I just don’t think it serves Biden to descend to Trump’s level.”

“The other day, a defeated guy walked up to me and said, ‘Mr. President, I’m being crushed by debt. I’m completely wiped out,’ " Biden said at an event in Raleigh, N.C., last week. “I had to look at him and say, “Sorry, Donald, I can’t help you.”

Laughter ensued.

And then there was the ad poking fun at Trump for prioritizing golf over campaigning across the country, something the Biden campaign is quick to highlight to counter the narrative that the 81-year-old president doesn’t have the energy it takes to hit the road.

Trump, for his part, made headlines after he shared a video with an image depicting Biden tied up in the back of a pickup truck.

His campaign doubled down when asked whether it was appropriate.

“That picture was on the back of a pick up truck that was traveling down the highway,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said, accusing “Democrats and crazed lunatics” of calling for violence against Trump and his family. “They are actually weaponizing the justice system against him,” Cheung said, according to reports.
