Young, talented OL grabbing Vershon Lee’s attention

South Carolina OL Vershon Lee made the move from center to tackle for the Florida game (C.J. Driggers/Gamecock Central).

Two weeks into spring practices and South Carolina is slowly forming a rapport at multiple positions. That’s been especially true at offensive line with a veteran group meshing with the younger players, according to fifth-senior senior Vershon Lee.

“Super excited because all the young guys that were with us that were either injured or not able to play, they got to see and take experience from what they saw on the field,” said Lee. “Even the new guys being able to join as a group (we’ve already) become stronger. I feel real confident. I like how we look right now.”

Injuries to the Gamecocks’ offensive line last season led to then true freshmen Tree Babalade and Trovon Baugh gaining valuable experience by starting in a combined 17 games. USC gained more experience, combined with some talented younger players, this offseason by adding six new scholarship offensive linemen. That included a trio of true freshman headline by five-star offensive tackle Josiah Thompson.

Kam Pringle, he’s a funny guy. He likes to talk. He’s keeping his head down and working hard. Josiah Thompson and Blake Franks, they’re both pretty quiet guys but at the same rate like Kam, they both work really hard. They take pride in their craft… they’re easy to talk to and they’re easy to give information to that I’ve experienced. They take it with an open ear. Just real good guys.”

Lee started in all ten games he played in in last season, most notably at center and right tackle. The veteran offensive lineman, who also has experience of playing guard, gives the Gamecocks flexibility with his versatility.

“I’m working a little bit of center but I’m always working around; always crossing training to make sure I’m ready to play any position. (Just) being able to fit in where ever the team needs.”
