'Top drawer': David James shocked by just how good £55m Liverpool player is after seeing him v Brighton

Liverpool fought hard to see off Brighton yesterday and now sit top of the Premier League table and David James was seriously impressed by one player.

With Arsenal and Manchester City playing out a 0-0 draw on Sunday evening, it’s now advantage Liverpool when it comes to the title race.

Mo Salah got the winning goal in an otherwise sloppy display of finishing from him, while Luis Diaz got the leveller to change the atmosphere inside Anfield.

Of course, those two players will take the plaudits but there were other Liverpool players who stepped up on the day as well. Including in midfield.

Indeed, former Reds stopper David James has lauded one of the Reds’ midfield three for his efforts.

Liverpool midfielder impresses against Brighton

Liverpool overhauled their midfield in the summer and so far, it’s gone just as well as they could ever have imagined.

The Reds went out and splashed money on Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Endo Wataru in the summer. And all four have played a huge role in helping Liverpool roar towards another title challenge.

And speaking about the midfielders for the official Liverpool Podcast, former stopper David James spoke of how impressed he was with what he’s seeing from Alexis Mac Allister.

David James praises Alexis Mac Allister

Speaking about the former Brighton man, who laid on the winning goal for Salah, James admitted he’s been surprised at how good the Argentinian has been.

“I think he found space very well. I think his passing was top drawer. Also his defending. I think that’s one thing when he first came to the club, everyone was used to Fabinho or Henderson and the energy in their defensive actions, whereas Mac Allister looks quite slight, he doesn’t look too physical, which is nice to see in a way. He’s effective, very effective,” James said.

“Everything about him, listening to him in his interviews as well, there’s nothing which worries you. He’s so calm and I think reassuring. And I think this is something that was a bit of a surprise for me watching him as a Liverpool fan, playing with Endo because I think the two of them were very similar in their understated manner, but they’re so effective. And I think they’ve just told people in performance this is what we do and this is how we do it well.”

Mac Allister was one of the stars of the show yesterday. Luis Garcia has lauded him, while even Roy Keane admitted to being impressed with him as well.

Liverpool, then, look like they’ve once again got it right in the transfer market, with the total deal for Mac Allister potentially being worth £55m.
