Tottenham now eyeing summer upgrade with £25m player failing to impress under Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur are now targeting a specific area to improve ahead of the summer transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were able to get back to winning ways on the weekend with a victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Luton Town.

However, there was one area on the pitch which, once again, looked in need of an upgrade following a questionable display.

The Australian has already admitted Spurs will look to bring in a new centre-back over the summer, but it now seems there is another area being eyed for improvement.

What position Tottenham will target in the summer

Once again, Tottenham found themselves going behind in a game at their north London home.

It was a goal which left Postecoglou furious with the 58-year-old sharing his anger about Tahith Chong’s goal.

He said: “We certainly had enough chances and we controlled the game pretty much from start to finish, but obviously when the scoreline is as it is, disappointing goal we conceded. That was the highly disappointing point of the day. I just thought it was preventable.”

And at the centre of the conceded goal was the midfielder Yves Bissouma who failed to put in a challenge on former Spurs man Andros Townsend in the build-up.

According to Alasdair Gold, Spurs will be assessing their options ahead of the summer and look for an upgrade with Atalanta’s Ederson a player who is being eyed.

He said: ‘Tottenham will look to improve their options in the number six role to see if there are potential upgrades available in the coming summer transfer window with Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder Ederson one of a number of players being looked at.

‘That will present an issue for Bissouma if he cannot find his way back to consistent performances.’

Could Bissouma be sold in the summer?

The £25m Mali midfielder came into the game on the back of some frustration from his omission from the national side.

However, he was not able put that energy into his performance with his effort to challenge Townsend nothing short of lacklustre.

Bissouma’s form has been an issue for the majority of the season now. He started off the campaign in stunning form, but his red card against Luton at Kenilworth Road was the start of his issues.

Since, he has been sent off again, left the side for the Africa Cup of Nations and picked up an illness whislt away with Mali.

Here is a summary of Bissouma’s performance against the Hatters on Saturday.

  • 85 minutes played
  • 67 touches
  • 2 fouls
  • 7x possession lost
  • 3 tackles
  • 2 fouls
  • 1x dribbled past

Speaking about the conceded goal, Postecoglou said: “That was the highly disappointing point of the day. I just thought it was preventable.”

And it can’t help but read as Postecoglou hinting towards the poor attempt from Bissouma to challenge Townsend down the right sideline.

But the 27-year-old is now really struggling to lay down some consistent form in Postecoglou’s XI and that may provide Postecoglou with some decisions to make.

Spurs can’t rest on Saturday’s three points with a quick turnaround to their trip to the London Stadium on Tuesday night.

And it has to be questioned whether Bissouma is playing himself out of the side with Rodrigo Bentancur now returning to full fitness after suffering a broken toe.
