Paul Merson predicts Chelsea v Manchester United score, tips one team to win close clash

Manchester United are back in action later this week, set to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

If there is one consolation for Manchester United amid this difficult season, it is that Chelsea have always been worse.

Whenever there is a bad result or performance for United, fans can always look at the chaos at Chelsea and reflect that there is at least one club being run more ineptly, and enduring worse performances on the pitch.

Take the weekend for instance. United drew 1-1 at Brentford. Chelsea were held to a 2-2 home draw against relegation-certainties Burnley, who had been reduced to 10 men.

This week, sixth placed United visit Chelsea. The Blues are not even in the top 10, ranked 11th, eight points behind the Red Devils.

Manchester United take on Chelsea

Manchester United will face Chelsea away from home in the Premier League in a rare Thursday night kick-off.

Earlier this season Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford, with Scott McTominay scoring the winning goal.

Ahead of this week’s match, pundit Paul Merson is tipping a reverse scoreline, telling SportsKeeda he is forecasting a 2-1 win to Chelsea.

Merson said: “It’ll be a big worry if they don’t beat Man United, because Chelsea fans will remember what Brentford did to United. This won’t be an easy encounter, but Chelsea should be able to win this game.”

Chelsea have only won 11 of 28 Premier League games played this season. United have won 15 of 29.

While United enjoy a healthy advantage over Chelsea in the table at present, the eight point gap could be reduced with a win for the Blues this week, who also have a game in hand.

Merson prediction backfired before

Paul Merson predicting a Chelsea win against Manchester United is probably a good omen for the upcoming match.

Merson, who is a Chelsea fan, got it spectacularly wrong ahead of United’s victory at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

He posted on X minutes before kick-off: “Big game tonight for Chelsea, no better time to be playing Man Utd. Can’t see Chelsea losing this one.”

United won the game 2-1, with a particularly dominant second half performance and rarely looked like losing it.
