Jamie Carragher claims £50m Liverpool player is not ‘great’ and he could be replaced this summer

Liverpool’s summer transfer business is the last thing from anyone’s mind at Anfield just now.

The Reds are locked in one of the most intense Premier League title races of recent years and are also pushing hard in Europe.

Beyond that, Liverpool still don’t even know who’ll be the manager in charge when the summer window opens.

Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped the rumours from coming. There’s been plenty by way of paper talk in terms of both incomings and outgoings for the Reds at close of play this season.

And according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, there’s one player that the new manager could look to be pushing out and bringing in someone better.

Jamie Carragher makes transfer suggestion

So far, the most likely casualties of Liverpool’s summer window have been rumoured to be some absolute key players at Anfield.

Virgil van Dijk is seemingly being watched by the Saudi Arabian sides, while Mohamed Salah has never left their gaze. A nervous window awaits for Reds fans in regards to both.

You can add Trent Alexander-Arnold to that list, too. Like Van Dijk and Salah, the right-back’s contract has just one year left to run and he’s reportedly attracting the attention of Real Madrid.

And then there’s Luis Diaz. Despite not having as prolific a season as he would have wanted, Diaz has been heavily linked with a move to PSG.

And according to Carragher on The Overlap podcast, Liverpool should actually look to cash in and improve upon the Colombian.

“I’d be really interested in summer. With Liverpool getting a new manager, would that be a position that Liverpool could look at in the summer? Wide left,” he posed. “I think Diaz is good, I don’t think he’s great.”

Should Liverpool sell Luis Diaz

It has certainly been a mixed season for Diaz. Although we’re probably on board with Carragher that the 27-year-old could be improved upon, he deserves more time.

The first half of the season was indeed really difficult for Diaz. But along with the impossible situation of his parents’ kidnapping, the £50m man was still recovering from a bad knee injury last year.

Having started so well on Merseyside in 2021/22, Lucho barely played during the last campaign. It was always going to take him some time to get back up to speed.

Now that he’s played his way back into proper match fitness, we’re starting to see the best of Diaz again. He was terrific against Manchester City recently and got another important goal this weekend. We understand the argument that he could be replaced, but we’d like to see Lucho stay.
