FSG are now getting really ‘close’ to making key appointment in new look football structure

Liverpool are currently right in the middle of a pretty big rebuild across all areas of the club.

As well as seeking out a new manager, the Reds have recently brought in a new sporting director, too. Richard Hughes is expected to bring a level of sophistication to the role not seen for a while.

Hughes’ job remit is to run all things Liverpool FC. It’s the 44-year-old who has been tasked with finding a successor for Jurgen Klopp and reports from the past week suggest he’s very keen on Sporting’s Ruben Amorin.

But it isn’t only Hughes who’s been brought in over the past weeks. Michael Edwards has also come back into the fold, and will act as FSG’s CEO of football.

Part of Edwards’ job will be to seek out a new football club for Liverpool’s owners to get their teeth into. And the former sporting director could just be about to receive some good news in that respect.

Who are FSG about to hire

Although it isn’t yet clear which club FSG could target to run alongside Liverpool, they’re getting the right people on board to make that decision.

According to journalist Ian Doyle on X this morning, the Reds owners are getting ‘close’ to hiring Benfica’s technical director Pedro Marques.

“FSG close to appointing Pedro Marques in a role in their new-look football structure,” Doyle reports.

“He’s currently technical director at Benfica. And is Portuguese.”

Who is Pedro Marques

Marques will not be a name too familiar to many Liverpool fans. And in reality, he perhaps doesn’t need to be even now.

It’s important to make the distinction that if the Portuguese is hired, he will be an employee of FSG and not Liverpool. His arrival shouldn’t really impact the Reds at all.

Nevertheless, he seems to be an incredibly highly rated operator who has worked for Sporting, Manchester City and Benfica.

According to the Liverpool ECHO, Marques worked as a performance analyst at City at the same time former Reds sporting director Julian Ward was there as a scout.

As a result, it seems likely that Ward’s input may have been sought by FSG on this one too.

While at City, Marques reportedly helped oversee the running of multiple of the City Group’s sister clubs, and this is sure to have appealed to FSG, too. Interesting times ahead.
