'Not needed': Pundit says 44-year-old manager may have just put Liverpool off hiring him after what he's said

Scott Minto believes that Liverpool will not have been impressed by what one manager has now said about his future amid interest from the Reds in making him Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

The hunt for the next Liverpool manager continues. Obviously, Jurgen Klopp left the football world stunned when he announced in January his decision to step down at Anfield at the end of the season.

There were suggestions that Xabi Alonso had agreed to become the next Liverpool manager. But those proved to be well wide of the mark, with Alonso confirming that he wants to remain in charge of Bayer Leverkusen last week.

With that, several other names have started to move up the queue. Liverpool are admirers of Ruben Amorim.

And it seems that Roberto De Zerbi is the Premier League boss attracting the most interest from Liverpool.

De Zerbi has done brilliantly at Brighton since succeeding Graham Potter. Nevertheless, the Italian has thrown his own question mark over his future on the south coast.

As reported by Guardian, the 44-year-old suggested that he wants to speak with the Seagulls’ hierarchy before deciding whether he intends to stay on next season.

Speaking on the Premier League All Access podcast, Scott Minto suggested that he had some sympathy for De Zerbi’s position amid links with Liverpool.

However, he does not believe that he has done himself any favours with his comments.

“There are certain owners out there, and I don’t need to mention names, where you could probably understand De Zerbi if he were the manager of that particular club, him coming out and saying that. I just think it’s not needed at best. It lacks a bit of class at worst. It’s not what a Liverpool manager would do,” he said.

“But I do kind of understand De Zerbi to a point. He’s a winner, he wants to win. I heard Adrian saying it’s six wins in 22 and they hadn’t had back to back victories since September. And he wants to change that. He doesn’t want those stats and he wants a bigger and better squad. He wants to be, with the greatest respect to Brighton, with a team like Liverpool that is capable of challenging and will have the finances to compete.

“I like De Zerbi, I think from a football point of view, he’d do really well at a top club. But yes, from a Liverpool hierarchy point of view, that’s not what a Liverpool manager in waiting would say really.”

Reds are always going to be taking a risk

De Zerbi is definitely a real character. And thus, there may be some reservations amongst the Liverpool hierarchy about targeting him as Klopp’s successor.

Ultimately, whoever they turn to is going to be a risky choice. Klopp is such an incredible figure, who has had a massive impact on the club’s fortunes.

Anyone coming in is going to need time and patience. But that person coming in could do a number of things to boost their hopes of keeping the fans on side.

De Zerbi’s teams play brilliant, exhilarating football. So that would help him. And he is someone who is certain in his ideas.

But Klopp has done an amazing job of unifying everyone as much as possible. And if Liverpool fear that De Zerbi cannot do the same, they may perhaps be reluctant to go down that path.
