Report: Ex-Middlesbrough boss narrowly misses out on Championship return after 'disaster' spell

News has just emerged suggesting former Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock was in line to join a Championship club this month.

Middlesbrough have had five different managers over the last five years, though, it seems Michael Carrick is here to stay for a lot longer than many of his predecessors.

Since suffering relegation from the Premier League in 2017, the club have tried and tested a number of different philosophies, personalities and styles, all with varying degrees of success.

Warnock, in particular, who was at the club for 17 months, was well-known for his touchline antics and media moments.

Whilst his spell at the Riverside wasn’t exactly inspiring, he did steady the ship and his stock at this level has clearly remained intact, given another side in the division have considered him for the job.

Former Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock was on Plymouth Argyle’s list of candidates to replace Ian Foster, who was dismissed by the club on Monday after suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Bristol City.

It left Plymouth without a win in six and just one point above Huddersfield Town, who reside in the relegation zone.

According to talkSPORT, the club’s director of football Neil Dewship has chosen to snub the veteran manager in favour of, himself.

It’s not often, these days, that a director will step in but that is the reality at Home Park, at least until the end of the season.

He will be supported by first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell, who has been at the club since 2005 when he re-joined as the under-18s manager following retirement from his playing career.

What next for Neil Warnock

With just over a month left of the season, it seems Warnock will be out of work at least until the summer.

After a ‘disaster’ eight-game spell, the 75-year-old departed Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen last month.

In his final post-match press conference at the club, following a 3-1 cup win over Kilmarnock, Warnock admitted a new manager was needed.

“I said I’d try to help them out and give them my advice. My advice is to get a new manager in as soon as possible now.

“They’re well down the line and it needs an overhaul in the summer. There’s no use waiting until then and they’ve listened to me.

“I think he needs to have a couple of months looking at the squad now in depth. Because I think to be successful – and you can be successful with the right recruitment – they need a couple of months to assess it.”
