'Understand...': Sheffield Wednesday now set to make contract decision on defender - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday look set to make a contract decision on this one defender.

Sheffield Wednesday are in the process of securing players’ futures beyond this summer, where 18 are set to leave the club.

That’s as it stands with a horde of players out of contract and several more seeing loan deals in S6 expire.

And despite the club’s fate this season having yet to be decided, it looks like the club are beginning work on new deals.

Danny Rohl previously revealed that he’s keen to see the likes of Barry Bannan, Josh Windass, and Di’Shon Bernard secure new deals.

Though it’s neither of them who are in line for a new deal right now.

Sam Reed, 21, joined Sheffield Wednesday from non-league Brighouse Town last year.

He’s since made an impression in the youth teams, earning himself his first-team debut against Coventry City in the FA Cup earlier this year.

And The Star journalist Joe Crann has now revealed on X that the left-back is set to see a one-year extension triggered, keeping him at Hillsborough for at least another season.

Who is Sam Reed

Reed is a boyhood Sheffield Wednesday fan.

He turned heads last time round with Brighouse Town, being named in the Northern Premier League East Team of the Season after making 39 appearances in the league that year.

After impressing on trial with Sheffield Wednesday, the Owls handed him his first-ever professional deal, with Reed since captaining the U21s on multiple occasions this season.

Academy boss Steve Haslam previously said of Reed:

“Sam is a hungry young player, he has good experience under the belt in senior football and joins our Under-21s.”

With relegation to League One looking more and more likely, especially after the 2-0 defeat vs Middlesbrough, players like Reed could be eyeing up a chance in the first-team.

Relegation would surely mean many of the out-of-contract players and loan players leave this summer, leaving whoever is in charge for next season with the barebones of a team.

Players like Reed then who have played in the first-team before, albeit very briefly, and who have been impressing for the U21s, could be fast-tracked into the first-team.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri looks unlikely to splash the cash no matter the outcome of this season and so Reed may well find himself playing first-team football perhaps sooner than he expected.

This emerging news of a potential new deal is very promising and shows how much he’s impressed since joining last summer.

Right now though, the club’s focus is on the league, and on a crunch match at QPR this weekend.
