Arsenal could break astonishing Premier League goalscoring record against Luton Town

Arsenal have a chance to break their own Premier League goalscoring record when they face Luton Town at the Emirates on Wednesday.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been free-scoring since the turn of the year, and it was a surprise that they didn’t find the net against Manchester City.

It was an incredibly cagey match, and in truth, Arteta must have been proud of his side’s robust display with all said and done.

And with a home fixture against Luton Town now on the horizon, the Arsenal boss will be hoping for a more straightforward win than December’s seven-goal thriller at Kenilworth Road.

That being said, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Arteta made a number of changes at the Emirates on Wednesday.

Both Takehiro Tomiyasu and Thomas Partey must be pushing for starts, as well as Gabriel Martinelli.

Jakub Kiwior looked understandably fatigued before he was replaced at the Etihad, given he had just played an emotionally-exhausting 120 minutes for his country days before.

Arsenal could goalscoring record against newly-promoted sides vs Luton Town

Mikel Arteta will surely be wary of making too many adjustments to his team against Luton, especially given they have scored in an incredibly impressive 18 league games in a row.

But it is Arsenal who have a chance of breaking a Premier League goalscoring record tomorrow in this second meeting against Luton.

In their five matches against the Premier League’s promoted-sides so far this season, Arsenal have scored 23 goals in total.

And via talkSPORT, the current record in a campaign is 24, which was set by Arsenal in the 2012-13 season.

On that occasion the newly promoted sides were: Reading, Southampton and West Ham United, with a 6-1 drubbing of the Saints at the Emirates proving the biggest scoreline.

Lukas Podolski, Gervinho and Theo Walcott were all scorers that day, three popular figures in North London.

And in terms of this season’s results against promoted sides, Arsenal have achieved the following:

28/10/23 – Arsenal 5-0 Sheffield United

11/11/23 – Arsenal 3-1 Burnley

05/12/23 – Luton Town 3-4 Arsenal

17/02/24 – Burnley 0-5 Arsenal

04/03/24 – Sheffield United 0-6 Arsenal

It’s an incredible run of results and it proves how ruthless Arteta’s side have become this year, finishing games like the best Manchester City sides of the past.

Of course, with all that being said, Arteta has just provided a vital injury update on Bukayo Saka ahead of Wednesday’s tie.
