Report: Tottenham still keen to sign rare £3m talent, one Spurs staff member once got sacked for naming him

Tottenham are still keen to sign a player who was actually involved in somebody being fired at Spurs in 2023.

Ange Postecoglou has now had plenty of time to assess his Spurs squad as his first campaign in N17 draws to a close, and recruitment plans are surely being drawn up ahead of an important summer transfer window.

There will be plenty of new names emerging as reported targets – such as Newcastle No.14 Alexander Isak – although there is still said to be interest in a player who Tottenham wanted to sign last year…

Tottenham still want to sign Kevin Mier

Well – according to Zocalo Saltillo – Tottenham still want to sign Kevin Mier.

Now, this name might ring a bell with some Spurs fans, as the Colombian was partly involved in a bizarre situation back in 2023.

According to the Daily Mail, those in the boardroom at Tottenham were left shocked and furious after Jeff Vetere – who used to work as a scout for Spurs – sat down for an interview with Win Sports TV while out in Colombia, where he let slip that Mier is a transfer target.

The Daily Mail add that a formal meeting was called and the 58-year-old then lost his job.

Despite Tottenham’s decision to part ways with Vetere, it seems as if Mier remains on the club’s radar.

The Colombian goalkeeper has impressed for Cruz Azul so far this season since arriving in a €3m (£2.6m) deal from Atlético Nacional, keeping five clean sheets in 12 Liga MX appearances while also conceding just 11 goals.

Zocalo Saltillo add that Brighton are also keen to sign the 23-year-old.

Spurs could sign a rare talent

In that now famous interview which angered Tottenham chiefs, Vetere did make some interesting comments about Mier.

The Englishman told Win Sports TV: “I see a goalkeeper who does not lack anything to cross the pond. We are looking because it is our task to see who the best youngsters are for international football.

“I think he’s going to play for the national side soon. He has things, for me, they are not normal for a boy of his age. I was surprised by his confidence and his handling of the ball.”

Any move for Mier would – however – pose questions about the futures of Fraser Forster and Brandon Austin, who are both waiting as backup options behind Guglielmo Vicario.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Tottenham clearly like the South American – having tracked him for at least 12 months now.
