President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law reducing the maximum age for citizens to be registered for military service from 27 to 25 years, according to the website of the Verkhovna Rada.
Verkhovna Rada passed law No. 9281 on May 30, 2023, and on June 5 of the same year, the document was sent for the president's signature. However, since then, it remained unsigned by the president.
On April 2, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada's website indicated that the law had been returned with the president's signature.
However, according to the text signed by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, last year, the law would come into effect on the day following its publication.
Therefore, it follows that from April 3, draft notices can be issued to 25-year-old conscripted citizens.
Lowering the mobilization age
On May 30th of last year, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law to lower the maximum age for citizens to be registered for military service from 27 to 25 years. At that time, 304 deputies voted in favor of the law.
The initiative for the bill came from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in conjunction with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not yet signed this law. Consequently, it has not yet come into effect.
Former Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, recently stated that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has still not approved the reduction of the maximum draft age for military service to 25 years, as this is a sensitive issue.
Furthermore, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated at his press conference on December 19th of last year that he is ready to sign the law lowering the maximum draft age for military service to 25 years. However, only if he receives arguments from the military.
