76-Year-Old Lakeland Pilot Killed In Plane Crash In South Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Polk County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a plane crashed in Polk County on Tuesday morning, killing one person.

The plane crashed in Mulberry near the South Lakeland Airport, which is located at 4868 Southwind Drive.

The only victim, was the pilot, 76-year old Arthur Canning of Lakeland, according to investigators.

According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, Canning had been a pilot for 10 years and had spent the last decade flying ultralight aircraft.

Judd noted that the plane that crashed was a brand-new experimental amateur build, or EAB, that had gotten its certificates last fall.

Canning took the plane for the first time less than a week ago, judd said at the press briefing Tuesday.

"He apparently stalled and crashed directly into the ground. He immediately died as a result of horrific traumatic injuries from the crash,: said Judd.

Judd said that PCSO is investigating the death however, the FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash.
