"The construction of the first underground school is complete. Currently, we are finalizing the last details before the start of classes. The premises have been built to the highest safety standards, with 20 classrooms and designed to accommodate 900 students in two shifts," Terekhov wrote.

He also noted that the enrollment of students for the next academic year is almost complete. This year, 600 children will already be sitting at their desks.

"We express our gratitude to our international partners, construction companies, and educators for bringing this strategically important project for Kharkiv to life in the shortest possible time! We plan to continue constructing similar schools in other areas of the city to ensure all our children have equal access to quality and, most importantly, safe education," the mayor added.

In 2023, the Kharkiv region ranked second in the list of regions with the longest duration of air raids. Throughout 2024, Russia almost daily shells Kharkiv. Accordingly, ensuring the safety of students under such conditions is realistically achievable only in an underground school.

Last year, on 5 stations of the Kharkiv metro, 19 classrooms were equipped, where more than 2,000 children study. According to the city council, there is a huge demand for education in this school, which is why the Underground School project is being implemented.

Additionally, Olha Demenko, the director of the Department of Education in Kharkiv, stated in an interview with Osvitoria that the first underground School will have a resource room, a conference hall, a cafeteria, and 20 classrooms.
