Democratic strategist Tim Persico believes that former President Donald Trump's inability to accept that he legitimately lost the 2020 election will doom his 2024 presidential campaign.

Appearing on The New Republic's "Daily Blast" podcast with Greg Sargent, Persico made the case that the 2024 election was starting to move more in Democrats' favor as more voters tune in and get a real sense of what a second Trump term would be like.

One glaring vulnerability for Trump, in Persico's estimation, is the fact that he will never own up to his lies about the 2020 race.

In fact, he says, Trump has continued to double down on them.

"Trump is setting the table in a way that is really unhelpful in the 2024 election for Republicans," he said. "Continuing with election denialism and, you know, claims of fraud and, you know, further conspiracy theories around democracy and elections, these things are incredibly unpopular with voters. ... They are something that Donald Trump is going to betalking about all the time."

Persico said that the former president's conspiracy theories about the election will be impossible for Republicans to avoid given that he is increasingly making them a litmus test for his support.

The strategist nonetheless outlined the dangers in underestimating Trump given that he has a documented history of being able to motivate infrequent right-wing voters who would normally not come out for elections.

Still, countered Sargent, swing-district Republicans at the moment seem to be feeling they "have no space to appeal to the moderate voters" who "think attacking cops and trying to overthrow elections is bad."

Trump has made paying tributes to the supporters who were jailed for violently attacking the United States Capitol on his behalf a staple on his campaign rallies, and he has even vowed to pardon them should he win another term in the White House.
