The conservative Daily Caller publication has retracted an article that claimed President Joe Biden was responsible for enacting a policy of banning religious-themed Easter eggs at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll.

In a correction note that appeared on the story, the publication acknowledged what assorted media fact-checkers had pointed out — that prohibitions on religious-themed Easter egg artwork at the event stretched back decades.

"Following the publication of this article, the Daily Caller became aware of additional context that undercut the central assertion of this article and its newsworthiness," the publication wrote.

"The ban of religious symbolism on eggs as part of the White House Easter egg art contest has been longstanding, dating back decades, and the Biden administration did not make any modifications to this rule.

"While the Caller did not explicitly state at any point that the rule was new, this additional context rendered the main thrust of the article misleading to readers, who could reasonably have come to the conclusion that the rule was new."

The article itself was used by many Republican politicians, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, to accuse Biden of waging a war on Easter despite the fact that Biden, a practicing Catholic, paid tribute to the holiday this week by saying that "Easter reminds us of the power of hope and renewal, sacrifice and resurrection, but mainly love and grace toward one another.:

In promoting the Daily Caller article, Johnson also accused Biden of trying to replace Easter with Transgender Visibility Day, a day that has fallen on March 31st since its inception and that just happened to fall upon Easter Sunday this year.

"The Biden White House has betrayed the central tenet of Easter — which is the resurrection of Jesus Christ," Johnson wrote on Twitter. "Banning sacred truth and tradition — while at the same time proclaiming Easter Sunday as 'Transgender Day' — is outrageous and abhorrent. The American people are taking note."
