Report: Manchester United scouting elite £51m centre-back who's just 'two steps' behind Virgil van Dijk

Manchester United will likely be in the market for a new centre-back in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have had their fair share of injuries in defence, with numerous players missing out on game time this season.

In addition, Manchester United duo Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans will be out of contract in the summer, while Victor Lindelof could well go up for sale.

At the weekend, the Red Devils allowed Brentford to have more than 30 efforts towards goal in the game, though luckily only five were on target.

With that in mind, Manchester United could well look to bring in more quality in order to shore up a fairly rickety defence.

Now, according to Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the Red Devils have been scouting a centre-back who sees himself as “two steps behind” Virgil van Dijk.

The player in question is Juventus star Gleison Bremer, who has been a revelation since arriving in Serie A from the Brazilian leagues back in 2018.

Plettenberg wrote on X: “Understand the 27 y/o central defender is one of many names on the list and he was scouted from the club.

“But nothing concrete or advanced at this stage. And very expensive. Price valuation: More than €50-60m (£43-51m) at the moment. Contract at Juventus valid until 2028.”

What has been said about Manchester United target Gleison Bremer?

It’s no surprise that Man United are reportedly trying to sign Bremer. After all, he’s a world-class defender in his prime.

In 2022, he was the Serie A Defender of the Year, and last term, he made it into their Team of the Season.

Last year, scouting outlet Foot The Ball noted how Bremer’s numbers were ‘comparable to Virgil van Dijk and Ruben Dias’.

He’s an elite presser of the ball, is great at recovery, interceptions and aerial duels, and is threatening at the other end of the pitch too.

Speaking to Italian outlet TMW earlier this year, Bremer compared himself to van Dijk, saying: “There are many defenders strong players around, like Van Dijk.

“He is two steps above me because he won the Champions League and plays in a tough league.

“When a player retires, only the trophies won count, if you haven’t won nothing you can’t say you were the best.”

Obviously a player of Bremer’s quality isn’t going to be cheap, but Man United would be getting themselves one of the best defenders from a league known for its defensive stars.
