Gary Neville baffled at Jamie Carragher snubbing ‘unbelievable’ Man Utd star for Liverpool team, it’s ‘interesting’ to see

Gary Neville admitted that he was surprised at how Jamie Carragher snubbed one Manchester United star for the current Liverpool team under Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.

Manchester United have endured a tough season under Erik ten Hag, who is facing an uphill battle in securing Champions League football for the club next season.

The Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League after finishing bottom of Group A and United’s Carabao Cup title defence fell well short of expectations.

United are currently sixth in the Premier League table and are 11 points adrift from fourth-place Aston Villa, who have played one more match than Erik ten Hag’s men.

Despite their poor showing in the league, the Red Devils could still finish the season with major silverware, with United currently reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are top of the Premier League table and are locked in a heated title race alongside Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Reds lifted the Carabao Cup trophy in February and are still in contention for the Europa League, having reached the quarter-finals of UEFA’s club competition.

However, Liverpool’s dreams of achieving a quadruple in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the club were thwarted after their FA Cup exit at the hands of United.

Carragher on Man Utd star he would take for Liverpool

Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher was asked which Manchester United first-team player he would take at Liverpool if he had the chance to pinch one.

The 46-year-old Liverpool legend picked United teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo, who is having a remarkable breakthrough season at Old Trafford.

Kobbie Mainoo has made his presence felt in the United first team in the current campaign, with the teenager quickly becoming a fan favourite at the club.

The 18-year-old United star has become a key midfield figure for Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag, who has praised Mainoo’s development at Old Trafford.

Mainoo’s impressive season even earned him a call-up to the England squad, with the Stockport-born player making his debut in the March international break.

“I think I would probably take the young kid, Mainoo,” Carragher said.

“Mainoo, his age, number one. I think he looks like a superstar. He could go on to be a real superstar.

“I’m trying to think of who else in the United team is better than a Liverpool player in their position, really.”

One audience member asked Carragher if he would consider Marcus Rashford as another potential United player he would take at Liverpool.

“Maybe Rashford. I actually think Liverpool in the summer, I’d be really interested – we’ve obviously got a new manager – but would that be a position you’d look at, wide left,” Carragher said.

“Because I’m still… I think [Luis] Diaz is good, I don’t think he’s great, so that could be a position.

“I think Mainoo with central midfield. Yeah, I’d go with him for the age factor.”

Gary Neville admitted that it was “interesting” that fellow Sky Sports pundit Carragher had completely overlooked United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes’ influence on the pitch has waned this season and the United captain has faced criticism over his consistency and leadership skills.

However, Neville insisted that the 29-year-old Portugal midfielder has been an “unbelievable” player for United in the last few seasons at Old Trafford.

“It’s interesting that neither of you [Carragher and an audience member] picked Bruno Fernandes, who’s the captain [and] who’s the most unbelievable player in the last three years with all of the assists and goals,” he said.
