Shane Beamer provides update on competition at QB

Six practices into spring and competition continues to pick up for South Carolina.

With LaNorris Sellers and Robby Ashford, among others, competing to be Spencer Rattler‘s successor at quarterback, Saturday morning will be a golden opportunity as the team is set to hold their first inter-squad scrimmage.

“I wouldn’t say (there’s been) separation, but those guys are continuing to battle,” said Shane Beamer. “Obviously when you talk about guys going in the stadium and being able to separate themselves, that’s a position where they’ll all get a lot of reps on Saturday.”

The closed scrimmage will be held at Williams-Brice Stadium and will feature SEC officials. Giving Beamer and the coaching staff an opportunity to see how his QBs respond when the lights turn on.

“They’ll get a chance to show how they handle operating the offense with the coaches not out there telling them everything and coaching every single rep. They’ll be some separation on Saturday, I would imagine and you hope there is. But, there’s great competition in there. A lot of guys are getting reps, they’re all competing and making each other better.”

Beamer admitted that he’s not sure yet if the quarterbacks will be live on Saturday. The scrimmage will provide Sellers and Ashford, as well as transfer quarterback Davis Beville and true freshman Dante Reno, a chance to create some early separation from one another before April 20th spring game. Additionally, Luke Doty, who has been working with wide receivers, has also been seeing time at quarterback.

“The biggest thing is one, how they operate. Okay, they’re in the stadium now and it’s a scrimmage, a game-like setting with officials and everything. Can guys operate? Can they run the offense, communicate and do the things that you need to do?”
