Michigan Wolverines head coach Dusty May could be closing in on his first official coaching staff hire since the move to Ann Arbor. Former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton is set to join as an assistant coach, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander.
Boynton, 42, was just let go at Oklahoma State after going 119-109 in seven years on the job from 2017-24. He had previously spent the 2016-17 season in Stillwater as an assistant. He was an assistant under Illinois head coach Brad Underwood in stops at both Stephen F. Austin and Oklahoma State.
Boynton got his start in coaching in 2004-05 as a graduate manager at Furman before serving at Coastal Carolina as an assistant in 2005-07. From there, he made stops at Wofford, South Carolina and Stephen F. Austin.
Boynton is known as an ace recruiter, headlined by landing the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2020 class in guard Cade Cunningham. Cunningham would shine in his lone season with the Cowboys before being selected No. 1 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. Boynton recorded three top-25 classes during his time there, additionally.
Boynton teams have also been strong defensively with four top-50 defenses under his watch in seven seasons on the job, including three teams that ranked inside the top-20 the last four seasons.
May discussed what he is looking for in his coaching staff during his introductory press conference in Ann Arbor:
“Well-rounded teachers, first and foremost, that are going to put the players first. They’re going to be great teammates amongst themselves. There’ll be a combination of new staff and old staffers coming with me. Once again, I’m gonna be very thorough and make sure the right guys are in the right spots for this place for this program. But I know that I’ll be surrounded by hard workers who really really care about the young men they are coaching, and if they don’t have a blast coming in every day doing it, then they’re not gonna fit in well.”
More moves are expected to come in the days and weeks ahead as May looks to mold Michigan. There are still two assistant coaching roles on the bench to account for, in addition to support staff and other aspects of the program. Those roles will continue to be filled as Michigan builds out a roster for next year with at least 7-8 scholarship spots available.
