'Over the top': Jamie Carragher says he had an issue with £30m Arsenal player's celebrations but not Arteta's

Arsenal remain firmly in the Premier League title race, having secured a solid point away at Manchester City on Sunday.

The Gunners played out a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium, which keeps Mikel Arteta’s side second in the table, two points behind Liverpool.

All three Premier League title chasers have now played 29 games, and with just three points separating the trio, we’ve got exciting run-in on our hands.

The Gunners wobbled earlier on this year, but a 3-1 win over Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium back in February breathed new life back into their title challenge.

Arsenal celebrated heartily at the final whistle, and in one instance, Gunners captain Martin Odegaard was spotted taking a picture of club photographer Stuart MacFarlane.

While Gunners fans enjoyed what they saw, there was criticism from some quarters. For instance, Sky Sports pundit and Liverpool cult hero Jamie Carragher wasn’t happy with the £30million man.

Two months on, Carragher still maintains Odegaard’s celebrations were “over the top”, though he didn’t have any issues with Arteta’s festivities.

“I’ve had a laugh about that and Odegaard was brilliant on Monday Night Football and I have seen the photographer a couple of times as well,” Carragher said on The Overlap.

“When that happens social media goes mad and everyone gets tribal, but I think it’s good we can have a laugh a few weeks later.

“I did think it was a bit over the top from Odegaard, not the celebrating of Arteta down the touchline, that’s in the moment, but I just thought that thing with the camera and the photographer – it reminded me of something you’d do when you won the cup.

“It’s a league game, you have won, get down the tunnel.”

Honestly, it just sounds like Carragher was salty at seeing his beloved Liverpool lose to Arsenal, who in turn celebrated a major win against a title rival to whom they’d lost in the FA Cup not long before.

Odegaard was just having a bit of fun with an Arsenal employee and supporter, capturing a special moment in front of the fans.

Did Carragher have any complaints when the Reds celebrated the 2-2 draw with West Brom in December 2015 that sent Jurgen Klopp’s side ninth in the table?
