'You will be surprised': Mateo Joseph says shock 23-year-old is actually one of the best finishers at Leeds

Leeds United have arguably the best crop of attacking options across the entirety of the Championship.

In Crysencio Summerville, Dan James and Joel Piroe, Leeds have three players in double figures for goals, with Patrick Bamford and Willy Gnonto not far away despite having rarely started in the first half of the season.

Georginio Rutter has also contributed to 21 goals, while Mateo Joseph feels like the next one ready to burst into life in terms of his goalscoring numbers.

Joseph has already shown what a deadly finisher he can be in front of goal in the limited opportunities he has had to start, with his double at Chelsea a real show of his potential.

He has also been incredibly unlucky not to net at Elland Road against either Stoke or Hull City, but did manage to salvage Leeds a point at Watford on Good Friday just seconds after coming off the bench.

Joseph says 23-year-old is actually one of the best finishers at Leeds

Amid Leeds’ vast array of attacking options, Joseph was asked on the latest episode of the Official Leeds United Podcast who the best finisher at the club is. One answer was certainly a surprise.

Initially, Joseph name-dropped Gnonto, Piroe and Bamford, none of which are a massive shock, even after the latter’s dreadful miss against Hull City on Monday night.

The stats alone prove Joseph is right with his answer on Gnonto, with the 20-year-old having been Leeds’ highest expected goals (xG) overperformer this season.

However, Joseph also added a fourth name to the list in his response, of which is a player who has found the net just twice all season, both in the same game.

He said: “Yeah, Willy Gnonto for example, he has a rocket. Joel Piroe is so calm when it comes to a really good finish. Patrick Bamford is always there on the spot where the goals are, I try to learn from him.

“Then I am going to say, and you will be surprised with this one, but I was doing finishing with Ethan Ampadu today and he was scoring goals.”

Ampadu has not scored in 40 league appearances for Leeds

As mentioned, Ampadu has scored just twice for Leeds since joining from Chelsea in the summer, with both coming in the 3-0 win at Peterborough United in the FA Cup.

His first actually came with a bit of a scuffed effort with his weaker left foot, before he then steered home a nice header from a corner late in the game.

In fairness, Ampadu has not had too many chances to score in the league, particularly since moving to centre-back, though it has not been for the lack of trying.

As per Sofa Score, Ampadu has an xG of 2.12 and averages 0.7 shots per game, both of which suggest he should’ve been on the scoresheet by now.
